London, 23 February 2023: this morning in Manchester, Keir Starmer outlined the Labour Party’s five national missions ahead of the next election,
Anthony Impey MBE, CEO of Be the Business, the small business productivity champions, said in response:
“Keir Starmer hit the nail on the head when he stated that the UK’s economic growth will need to be powered by good jobs and stronger productivity in every part of the country. However, I would like to see policymakers go one step further and recognise that a strong economy is fueled not only by growth, but also by ambition.
“Take business leaders, for example. Research conducted by Be the Business found that one in three (32%) UK SME leaders do not want to increase the turnover of their business. However, 82% of those who do not want to grow are always looking to improve their business. Crucially, this does not equate to a lack of ambition, and improvements in these areas are likely to have a positive impact on productivity.
“We are a country of great innovators and thinkers, so let us support both those who want to grow and those who are ambitious about being a better business. By being open to diversity of aspiration, we may end up building a better economy in the long term.”
