Improving Construction Productivity: Practical Insights from Pilot Site Studies
The paper written in collaboration with members of the CPT forum: Skanska, LandSec, Sir Robert McAlpine, Mace and the University of Cambridge, draws on insights and lessons learned from three major pilot projects—Broadgate Tower, Timber Square, and the Vehicle Storage Support Programme (VSSP). It highlights how early supply chain engagement; improved construction sequencing and the use of integrated digital tools can significantly reduce production variability and improve on-site productivity.
It identifies key disrupters and enablers impacting productivity and showcases how data-driven approaches combined with advanced digital tools and collaborative planning can transform project delivery outcomes.
It aims to help UK construction teams enhance project delivery through smarter planning, digital innovation, and collaborative working.
Key findings include:
Tangible increase in façade installation output at Broadgate Tower, enabled by construction sequencing efficiencies.
Improved design productivity at VSSP through the use of digital planning tools aligned with two-week lookahead schedules.
Identification and mitigation of common productivity disruptors at Timber Square, including crane dependency, weather delays, and inconsistent sequencing.
